"We have to figure out how to grow it sustainably. Nobody wants to lose chocolate." --Carol Knight, of the American Cocoa Research Institute.
For decades cocoa has been grown in large monoculture plantations, but
diseases are wiping it out faster than it can be replaced. The only
hope for the survival of chocolate is to grow cocoa in its natural
habitat, tropical rainforest, where the biodiversity protects cocoa
against disease and pests. Conservationists and chocolate makers seem
to have found a common goal.
Here's this ecosystem built around a treat that could be good for
the world. --Industrial scientist for M&M/Mars.
So, save the rainforest, or no more chocolate! That *would* be the end of the world!
