MONROVIA, CA - Administrators at Clifton Middle School are defending
their actions in a case involving potential child abuse. Earlier this
week the school called Child Social Services to report that they had
reason to suspect that two students, the McAllister twins, were being
abused by their parents. Apparently the school learned that the Twins
were being forced to do their homework and that their parents were not
allowing them to watch T.V. on school nights. Said one administrator,
"Until yesterday, I had only heard of abuse of this type. I didn't think
that I would ever encounter it first-hand." Said Mrs. Crabapple, the
McAllister twin's English teacher, "I knew that there was something
wrong when I discovered that the twins had turned in every assignment
on-time and that they had the highest grades in the class."
When Mrs. Crabapple confronted the twins she learned that their parents
wanted them to do well in school so that they could go to college and
eventually into a high paying career. Because of these misguided hopes
their parents had implemented strict study rules. They insisted that all
homework would be done on-time and that it would be done right. They
curbed T.V. watching and encouraged the twins to read books if they were
done with their homework. Said Mrs. Crabapple, "What is happening to our
society? What kind of parents would deny their children the right to
watch five hours of T.V. a night. Those parents should be ashamed of
themselves! They are monsters!"
When Child Social Services received the call from Clifton Middle School
they immediately detained the McAllister twin's parents. Said one Social
Worker, "Since the twins had no physical signs of abuse on their bodies
we were not able to have them taken from the home. However, we are
certain that a more thorough investigation will be able to prove that
the twins have been abused."
Child Social Services claims that this type of abuse has been growing at
an alarming rate. They encourage you to pay close attention to the
children in your life to see if they are showing signs of abuse. Said
one CSS spokeswoman, "The signs to look for include...
1. The child displays a love for learning.
2. The child can read at or above grade level.
3. The child's vocabulary skills exceed 1st grade standards.
4. The child does not have the entire prime time schedule for all the major networks memorized.
5. The child knows the difference between a subject and a predicate.
6. The child has a GPA of 3.0 or above."
